Urine is produced when your kidneys filter the waste materials and extra water from your blood. Typically, no germs or bacteria are present in the urine as it passes through your urinary system. However, bacteria from the outside of the body can enter the urinary system and cause issues including infection and inflammation.

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an inflammation that can affect your bladder, kidneys, or urethra. Most infections affect your urethra and bladder, which make up your lower urinary tract.
