Helpful actions when trying to manage benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) include:

  • Limiting beverages before bed to avoid waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom

  • Limiting alcohol and caffeine consumption throughout the day

  • Decreasing the use of decongestants or antihistamines as they may result in tightening of the muscles that control the flow of urine.

  • Going to the bathroom when you first feel the sensation. Waiting too long may overwork your bladder.

  • Retraining your bladder. Selecting regular times to go to the bathroom may result in a more predictable routine for your bladder.

  • Keeping a healthy lifestyle. Watching what you eat and drink, together with staying active will help decrease urinary problems.

Always consult your healthcare provider with any questions regarding a medical condition.
